Last Will and Testament of John Patching
In the Name of God Amen, the 16th day of November in the yere of our Lorde God 1522, I John Pachyng of the parisshe of Horsham within the dioces of Chechester beyng of good mynde and perfite memorye make and ordeyne this my testament and last will in manner and forme followyng First I bequeth my soule to Almyghtye God, to his blessed mother Mary the vigyne and to all the saints in hevyn. And my body to be buryed in the parishe church yarde of Horsham aforesaid. Item I gyve and bequethe to the cathedralle churche of Chichester 12d and to the highe aulter of the parishe church of Horsham for my tythes and offeryngs neclgently forgoten 4d Item I give and bequeth unto the makiyng of the 12 apostells to the Rodelof in the church of Horsham 40s Item I will that aboute the tyme that I shall departe this transitorye and uncertayne lyf that my Executors shall kepe an obite in the parish church of Horsham aforesaid of 12s by the space of 7 yeres for the welth of my soule and all christian soules Item in lyke manner I will that my said Executors shall kepe an obbite in the parish church of Nuthurst of 6s 8d ayere by the space of 7 yeres Item I wille that a seculer prest that was never religiouse be hiered to celebrate masse in the said parish church of Horsham by the space of one yere for the welth of my soule and all cristen soules and the said prest to have for his stypende and wages for the said yere 10 marks Item I gyve and bequeth to Agnes my wyf 20 marks sterling of good and lawful money of England tobe paid to her by my Executors with a ffetherbedd and materas with all thyngs that belong unto a bed with all other thyngs that I have gyven and charged myne Executors to delyver to Agnes my said wif Item I gyve and bequeth to Agnes ___ goddaughter to Agnes my said wif to her marriage 40s Item I gyve and bequeth unto Walter Combre my servant 6s 8d Item I gyve and bequeth unto Henry my sonne £40 sterling of good and lawfull money of England to be delyvered to him by myne Executors at such tyme as he shall come and be oute of prentishod (priesthood?) And if it shall fortune the said Henry my sonne to dye or that he shall come tobe oute of his said prentishod that then the said £40 so to my said sonne Henry afore bequethed tobe equally devided between the said Thomas Pachyng and Richard Pachyng my sonnes The residue of all my goodes and cattalls not bequethed, my debts paid and this my present testament fulfilled I gyve and bequeth unto Thomas Pachyng and Richard Pachyng my sonnes equally to be devided between theym which Thomas and Richard I ordigne and make my Executors they to dispose in dedes of charite, pitee and mercy for the welth of my soule and all christian soules as they shall thynke most best In thys beryng witness Sir William Westen prest and curate of Horsham, William Danyell, Richard Lynted, Richard Barwyke, Richard Pachyng and John Pachyng of the parish of Horsham with others Item I ordeyne and make William Danyell clerk of Horsham Supervisor to oversee that this my present testament and last wille have true execucion and the said William to have for his true diligence and labour 6s 8d
And as to the dysposicion of all my landes and tenements I will that my feofees, my heire and Executors uphold Agnes my wif in all such landes as I have gyven hir by dede for the terme of hir lyf Also I will that Richard my sonne shall have all my lands called Whetelandes and a parcell of land called Crokhurst which I bought of Thomas Manncell and also twoo croftys and a gardyn called Tomys Crofts to hym and to his heires forever Also I will that Richard my said sonne shall have a croft called Horshams Hyll the which I purchaced late of Richard Manncell to hym and to his heires forever And also all my yeres of a plotte of land called lytill Wellers to him and to his heires forever Also I will that John Pachyng my sonne shall have my tenement with th'appurtenances called Bottyngs lying in the parishe of Nuthurst and a tenement with certayne landes thereto belongyng lying in the parishe of Westgrensted called Litill Fullers and a plotte of land lying in the parishe of Nuthurst called Lytill Colmans to hym and to hys heires forever Also I will and gyve to Sir Matthew Browne, Knight, and to Henry Pachyng my sonne all my right tytle of detts and landes which I shuld of right have of Thomas Shurley that is to say certeyne landes called Bokers lying in the parishe of West Grensted And certeyne landes called Lityll Fullers and the rents of the same which the said Thomas Shurley hath witholden by the space of twoo yeres and an half to the value of 20s a yere In thys beyng wytness these persons above named Item I gyve and bequeth to Thomas Pachyng my godson a kowe Item I will that John Pachyng shall have twoo trowys and twoo ___ within my house and withoute at Nuthurst after the decease of Agnes my wif And all the residue of all my goodes and catells not bequethed I wilbe devided bitweene the said Thomas Pachyng and Richard Pachyng my sonnes by equal porcions that is to say the said Thomas Pachyng to have the oon half of my goodes and catells and the said Richard Pachyng my sonne to have the other half of my goodes and catells And my overseer above named to see this goodes and catells aforesaid be thus devided accordyng to this my testement and last wille Witness Sir Barthelmewe, Richard Walder and Henry Michell &c
