Henry Page and Martha King

The Village Blacksmith

Henry Page was born in 1733 in Warnham, Sussex, and was baptized 15th June 1733 in St Margrets, Warnham, the son of Thomas Page and his wife Sarah, formerly Charman. Martha King was born in 1736 in Newdigate, Surrey and baptised on 31st March 1736 in St Peters, Newdigate. She was the daughter of William King and his wife Elizabeth Pooke. Henry became the blacksmith in Capel, Surrey, following on from five generations of his wife Martha's family who had been blacksmiths in Capel since the mid 17th century. Henry and Martha had nine children, Henry, b. 1757, Thomas, b. 1759, William, b. 1762, Sarah, b. 1764, Martha, b. 1765, Mary, b. 1767, Phillip, b. 1770, John, b. 1771, and Charles, b. 1777. Henry appears in the Surrey Land Tax records between 1781 and 1798 as occupying a tenement in Green Lane, Capel. Henry and Martha probably died within hours of each other and were buried on the same day, 24th July 1812 in Capel churchyard where a memorial headstone marks their grave and that of their son William.

Henry Page was baptised on 17th January 1757 in Capel, Surrey. He became a blacksmith in partnership with his father. He appears in the UK Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices in 1791, taking on an apprentice named Thomas Ventrice.

William Page was baptised on 30th January 1762 in Capel, Surrey and was buried on 25th December 1776 in Capel, aged 14. A memorial headstone marks his grave in Capel churchyard.


Sarah Page was baptised on 19th August 1764 in Capel, Surrey and buried on 31st October 1764 in Capel.


Martha Page was baptised on 19th October 1765 in Capel, Surrey.


Mary Page was baptised on 25th October 1767 in Capel, Surrey.


Philip Page was baptised in 25th March 1770 in Capel, Surrey.


John Page was baptised on 15th December 1771 in Capel, Surrey. He married Sarah. John and Sarah had 7 children, John, William, Sarah, Martha, Henry, Mary Ann and Alfred. John was the blacksmith in Chipstead, Surrey. He appears in the 1841 and 1851 census in Chipstead.


Charles Page was baptised on 3rd August 1777. He also became a blacksmith in Capel. He married Elizabeth. Charles and Elizabeth had 5 children, James, Martha, Barbara, Henry and Mary. Charles was buried on 25th April 1830 in Capel churchyard, a memorial headstone marks his grave. He left a will dated 7th April 1830 and probate was granted on 8th September 1830 to his wife Elizabeth, the executor.
